A serious burn can be identified by certain distinct characteristics of the skin. When the skin appears charred, white, or leathery, it typically indicates a deep and severe burn, often classified as a third-degree burn. This type of burn damages not only the outer layer of skin (epidermis) but also the underlying layers (dermis) and may affect deeper tissues, nerves, and blood vessels. The presence of blisters can also signal that the burn is serious, as blisters indicate the skin's surface is significantly compromised and can also be a sign of second-degree burns, which can range from severe to critical.

When assessing burns, the severity is determined by their appearance and the symptoms experienced. While redness and swelling indicate a less severe first-degree burn or possibly superficial second-degree burns, they do not indicate the level of damage that charred or leathery skin suggests. Pain may be present in various degrees with burns, but it doesn't solely define the seriousness of the injury.
